We were asked to include a central art feature for Area 404 for which we developed designs for an ancient Titan which has awakened and is rising from the ground.
With sustainability in mind we had a number of challenges to overcome to bring this 7m tall structure to life. Once the 3D design was created, we split the model into sections and created templates to hand cut a layered plywood base structure. We couldn’t use any plastics or standard laminating materials, so we created the shapes using a wire mesh, and coated the structure in old bed sheets which were dipped in a fabric hardner, which was then painting with natural mineral paint.
The sculpture was built around a scaffold structure, which allowed access for theatre to perform regular ‘happenings’ from a top platform.
