We were tasked with building a 3-dimensional model map of Mauritius, which was to be installed in the newly built Discovery Centre at Casela Park on the Island. It was important to build the model to scale and include all of the terrain features of the island, including the various mountains, towns and coast line.
The model was hand sculpted, first using polystyrene to form the contours, then layered with clay which was meticulously sculpted using maps and aerial imagery as reference. We were asked to create 10 points of interest, relative to attractions and landmarks from the island. For each of these we created an enlarged model and added led lighting effects which would glow at the press of a corresponding button.
We built the map in our workshops in the UK, which we moulded and cast in fibreglass. We had to build the map in sections for shipping, then when it arrived in Mauritius we pieced the model back together and a large wooded table was constructed to house the model.
