In January 2019 we began developing a design for the new district ‘Area 404’ which would be a themed street at Boomtown Fair 2019, a popular UK music Festival which was to take place in August later in the year. This design was to first consider using recycled sets and features from Sector 6, an old main stage which had been at Boomtown for the 3 years previous.
We began with old designs of Sector 6 and broke the individual parts down in 3D software, from which we could then re-build and re-purpose into a brand new set and layout. Essentially a giant jigsaw puzzle. In the design we had to also develop a scaffolding design to hold the sets which was then passed on to OTP, an events scaffolding company who then re-assesed our design to include structural calculations ready for their team to be able to build the scaffold structures onsite.
Once we had the 3D design together, we were able to drop these into VR so that those involved in the project could get a realistic idea of scale before stepping foot in the field. As we had worked the scaffold design into the 3D model we were able to get a fairly accurate view of how the finished build would look.
Then, in early July, our crew of 26 arrived onsite to an empty field alongside OTP to begin the epic 3 week build. Each and every member of the team worked tremendously hard to complete the project on time and on budget, the final build was something we are certainly very proud of and had the best time putting it all together. Thanks guys, you are all absolute legends!
